Located on the north side of the Brooks Peninsula on northwestern Vancouver Island in Quatsino territory are the remote and mythical rainforests of East Creek. Until recently, East Creek was one of the very last major, unlogged valleys on the southern coast of BC. However, a logging road was blasted into the upper valley in 2002. After a decade+ pause, in 2015, logging spread to the lower valley and the tributaries as well through a series of brutal clearcuts.
Ancient Forest Alliance has carried out aerial flyovers and on-the-ground expeditions to document both the incredible forests and destructive logging found in this remote wilderness area. As of 2024, where trees still stand, one can find incredible valley-bottom Sitka spruce forests and giant ancient cedar groves, some of which have been surveyed for future logging.
With five species of spawning salmon, a diverse array of wildlife (including threatened species), stunning temperate rainforests, and many Culturally Modified Trees, the protection of East Creek’s remaining old growth is of top conservation priority.
