In 2013, Ancient Forest Alliance campaigners Ken Wu, TJ Watt, and Hannah Carpendale travelled to Haida Gwaii, a spectacular part of the province, where the campaigns to protect old-growth forests in BC began in the 1970s. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Council of Haida Nation and conservationists, over 50% of the Islands have been protected through legislation in Haida Protected Areas (Conservancies), Gwaii Haanas (South Moresby) National Park Reserve, and various provincial parks and ecological reserves, with additional areas protected through regulations. Some of the finest ancient Sitka spruce and redcedar stands are found here, as well as spectacular coastal terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
