The Klanawa Valley in Huu-ay-aht territory is a place of extreme contrast. Home to some of the most magnificent old-growth forests and largest trees in BC, including rare communities of redwood sorrel and ancient Sitka spruce, the valley has also been scarred by some of the most brutal clearcuts and most egregious logging of ancient forests that we’ve ever seen. Year by year, the valley’s ancient forests are being stripped away through massive clearcuts, threatening the area’s ecological integrity and the diverse wildlife species that call this valley home, such as Roosevelt elk, black bear, cougar and the endangered marbled murrelet.
Tucked away in a remote region between Nitinat Lake and Bamfield, the Klanawa is out of sight and, therefore, out of mind for most people. Through these illuminating and shocking images, we hope to shed light on the need to protect the incredible forests that can still be found here.
