Seen here are shocking before and after images of old-growth redcedar trees cut down in the Caycuse watershed in the Ditidaht territory on Vancouver Island, BC. This magnificent grove, photographed by Ancient Forest Alliance’s TJ Watt in the spring and fall of 2020, is now a sea of giant stumps. Logging company Teal Jones clearcut over 33 football fields of highly endangered, productive old-growth forest here with approval from the BC NDP government.
TJ’s before and after photos went viral on social media and continue to be shared around the world today. They also gained widespread media attention, receiving coverage in The Guardian newspaper, the cover of British Columbia magazine, a feature in Red Bull magazine, and received numerous awards in photography competitions across the globe.
